Methylene Blue Serum: Morning or Night?

Skintervene editorial 1 min read Updated

One of the most common questions about methylene blue serums is when to put them on. The short version is that timing is flexible. What matters more is where it sits in your routine and what else you're using.

In short: you can use a methylene blue serum in the morning, at night, or both. It is not a photosensitiser, so it doesn't need to be kept to evenings like a retinoid. Morning use pairs naturally with SPF as part of daytime antioxidant protection; if you also use a retinoid or strong acid, keep those at night and methylene blue in the morning. Apply it after cleansing and before moisturiser.

Where it goes in your routine

01

Cleanse

Leave skin slightly damp. Water-based serums spread and absorb better that way.

02

Methylene blue serum

Two to three drops pressed into face and neck. Give it about a minute.

03

Moisturiser

Seals in the serum and supports the barrier.

04

SPF 30+ (morning only)

Always the last step in the morning.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use methylene blue in the morning or at night?

Either, or both. It isn't a photosensitiser. Morning use pairs well with SPF; if you use a retinoid or strong acid, keep those at night and methylene blue in the morning.

Can I use methylene blue twice a day?

Yes, once your skin is used to it. If your skin is sensitive, start with every other evening for a week.

Do I need SPF with methylene blue?

Methylene blue doesn't make skin more sun-sensitive the way retinoids can, but daily SPF 30 or above is still the single most important step for skin ageing.

Does methylene blue go before or after moisturiser?

Before. Apply serums to clean skin, then moisturiser, then SPF in the morning.
